EquiAttune Experiential 1 Day Workshop: Integrating the Neuroexperiential Model into Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning

About this live event

EquiAttune is a specialized process that synchronizes the nervous system's natural healing and regulation abilities with the attuned, healing presence of equines, all within the relational and neurobiological framework of Brainspotting. This workshop is designed for Brainspotting practitioners who are ready to creatively practice the Neuroexperiential Model (NEM) and the Dual Attunement Frame in an equine-assisted setting. Throughout this workshop, you will gain a profound understanding of how the equine nervous system naturally adds to the neurobiological frame, fostering a powerful dual-regulation dynamic. We will explore the principles of attunement, communication, and regulation through direct observation and hands-on practicums. Participants will experience how a horse's finely tuned senses and herd instincts can provide real-time feedback, helping to stay in the present moment and be curious. This workshop is a unique opportunity to expand your practice by integrating the power of Brainspotting with the profound wisdom of equines, enabling you to provide a space for deep, authentic mindful processing. This workshop does not qualify any participant as an equine-assisted trained provider. It is an introduction to equine-assisted Brainspotting that includes experientials. No equine experience is needed. Limited to 10 participants

Learning Objectives

  • Review of the Neuroexperiential Model (NEM).
  • Discuss and provide scientific research about equines effect on the human nervous system and regulation.
  • Discuss and provide psychoeducation on non-verbal communications in equines.
  • Practice and apply a body resource spot while connecting with equines.
  • Identify and recall characteristics of hyper and hypo arousal.
  • Discuss, compare and contrast the human and equine nervous systems development and reactions to stress.
  • Review different forms of attachment, and compare and contrast secure and insecure attachment characteristics.
  • Discuss and identify characteristics of attachment traumas effect on the development of the nervous system and how equines contribute to healing attachment wounds and traumas.
  • Participant in a expansion spot equine relating group activity.

8:00-8:30 – Introductions, Training Overview, Learning Objectives

8:30-9:00 - Discussion and psychoeducation covering why we use equines in therapy

9:00-9:30 - Equine connection group experiential with resourced spot

9:30-9:45 - Break

9:45-11:15 - Discussion and review of the Neuroexperiential Model. Discussion and psychoeducation of the Uncertainty Principle, the Dual Attunement Frame, Focused Mindfulness, Staying in the Tail of the Comet, and WAIT.

11:15-11:30 Equine mindfulness group experiential  

11:30-12:30 Lunch

12:30-1:30 - Group Discussion of EquiAttune - Incorporating equines into Brainspotting, the NEM, the Dual Attunement Frame, the Uncertainty Principle, and Mindful Processing

1:30-2:30 – Group connection equine experiential with expansion spot

2:30-2:45 - Break

2:45-4:00 - EquiAttune Demo

4:00-4:30 - Debrief and end of day

  • Cara Wilkerson, MS, LMFT

    Cara Wilkerson is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California, Florida, and Texas with over 18 years of experience providing therapy. She graduated Suma Cum Laude, from California State University San Marcos, with a Bachelor degree in Psychology and a minor in Criminology. She completed her Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from California Baptist University, specializing in Marriage and Family Therapy. She specializes in treating complex PTSD, trauma, dissociation, and anxiety.

    Cara is a trauma expert, a Consultant for both Brainspotting and EMDRIA, an EMDRIA specialty trainer, as well as certified in Brainspotting, EMDR, and the Eagala model of equine-assisted psychotherapy. She developed EquiAttune which integrates the Neuroexperiential Model of Brainspotting and the Dual Attunement Frame into equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning sessions.

    Cara has owned and run her own private practice for the last 10 years, and has previous experience working in group practice settings, school settings, non-profits, and working with the drug court of San Bernardino. In addition, Cara is a Clinical Supervisor to associates working toward their licensure.
